URGENT: WA EPA RECOMMENDS FRACKING APPROVAL - CALL THE ENVIRO MINISTER

Breaking News: The Environmental Protection Agency has just recommended approving Black Mountain’s Valhalla project - now it is up to WA Labor to make the final decision.

We know the environmental risks to the Kimberley are far too large. Fracking would threaten the endangered species, the precious waters of the sacred Martuwarra Fitzroy River, damage the climate and pollute the landscape with frack wells and wastewater ponds.

We need to ensure WA Labor hears from us loud and clear, and that starts with calling the WA Environment Minister, Matthew Swinbourn and calling on him to reject Black Mountain’s frack plan - and ban fracking in the Kimberley for good

CALL THE ENVIRONMENT MINISTER - HON MATTHEW SWINBOURN - 08 6552 6800

You will either reach a staff member or an answering machine, please leave a short message.

Alternatively, try his electorate office: 08 9452 8311

Here’s what you can say:

  • I am calling to ask Minister Swinbourn to reject Black Mountain’s proposal and ban Kimberley fracking.

Issues you could also raise:

  • Water Pollution: The project would risk polluting the catchment of the Martuwarra Fitzroy River with fracking chemicals and radioactive waste.
  • Endangered species habitat destruction: Black Mountain’s long term plans include decades of drilling that would fragment habitat for threatened species like the Bilby and Freshwater Sawfish. This project clearly poses an unacceptable environmental impact in the Kimberley.
  • Long-Term Damage & Climate Risks: The project would release 1.6 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in seven years, undermining WA Labor’s climate and decarbonisation commitments.

I tried the electorate office number and the staff member made a note of my concerns about environmental damage in the Kimberley if the Black Mountain project to frack in the Kimberley goes ahead. She said she would pass them on to the minister.(I previously tried the first number but had a long wait so tried the electorate office.

I was on hold for a few minutes and when I spoke to somebody they asked me to email

I asked if my call was been recorded as a commentary and she didn’t really clarify but took my name and asked to email again

I was answered after a short wait by a receptionist (by the sound. Feminine voice). Said I called for more information on Project Valhalla. Given the email [email protected] to enquire further, which I will do.

Emailed my MP Mark Folkard and expressed my great disappointment and reminded him about Labor’s conference last year to ban all fracking in WA. Asked him to speak to the Premier and Environment Minister on my behalf about rejecting this proposal

OK. I spoke with a staffer who didn’t know what I was talking about and asked me to send an email.

I spoke about community values, indigenous connection to Country, Labor party conference recommending against fracking.

Electorate office took a message to be passed on. The person at the Ministerial office was “just answering the phones” and supplied an email address for comtacting the Minister; it was unclear whether she would register the phone call or pass on the message outlined.

I also rang my local MP’s office and they were very sympathetic so maybe that’s also a good strategy.

Telephoned the ministers office and left a message as the phone went to message bank. Telephoned the electorate office, got through but was tol it was the electorate office and they couldn’t comment, I asked them to pass on my concerns. It is clear that there is a lot of gate keeping.

I was kept in the phone system’s antechamber for over 2 minutes before being automatically directed to the answering machine. I didn’t speak to anyone, sadly.

I left a polite message asking the minister to reject fracking in the Kimberley.
