Black Mountain Energy, via subsidiary Bennett Resources Ltd, is proposing to drill and frack up to 20 gas wells in the Kimberley but claiming that the activity won’t have a significant impact on matters protected under national environmental law (‘MNES’).
It’s crucial that the utmost scrutiny be applied and the outstanding nationally significant environment of the West Kimberley be protected.
You may have heard this call to action before. This is the second time Black Mountain has referred the Valhalla project for a free pass under Federal environment law! They withdrew last time after criticism that their application didn’t cover the full extent of their proposed activities.
Please make a submission today calling on Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek to declare the Valhalla Project a “controlled action” for its impacts on water resources, national heritage, and threatened and migratory species.
How to submit:
Click “Make Comment” and fill in the form, making sure you say YES the project is a controlled action.
Suggested points to include are impacts on:
- The Martuwarra Fitzroy River, as part of the West Kimberley National Heritage Place (WKNHP);
- Nationally listed threatened species including the Greater bilby;
- Nationally listed migratory species, like the Common sandpiper;
- A highly significant water resource - within the scope of the ‘water trigger’;
- There is little to no information in the proposal about the management and disposal of contaminated water and drill cuttings;
- Fracking is a highly invasive industrial process that uses chemicals and brings contaminated water to the surface where it must be stored and transported. It is crucial that the Federal government properly assess and consider the full range of risks associated with introducing this activity to the West Kimberley.
