Make the call now

The McGowan government has granted an exemption to Texas-based frackers, Black Mountain, to export gas from the Kimberley.

This exemption comes before the WA Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) finishes assessing the project, yet somehow the WA government found it fitting to effectively greenlight Black Mountain’s fracking ambitions in the Kimberley.

We know that an objective, science-backed assessment would find any fracking project to be completely unacceptable for the Kimberley’s fragile environment, and we cannot risk fracking projects going ahead and creating thousands of wells and pipelines across the region.

Will you call Mark McGowan today and demand he ban fracking in the Kimberley?

(08) 6552-5000

Here are some talking points for what you can say:

  • I am very disappointed that the McGowan government has given an exemption to export huge volumes of gas to a Texan company intending to frack the Kimberley.
  • A large-scale fracking project would be completely unacceptable for the Kimberley’s communities and fragile environment.
  • The risk to our climate from fracking is far too great. There will be potentially billions of tonnes of emissions released from fracking if the Kimberley is opened up, with thousands of frack wells, plus big gas pipelines and processing plants.
  • The McGowan government should listen to the people of WA and the Kimberley who have repeatedly voiced firm opposition to fracking, rather than doing favours for gas fracking companies.

If you call please let us know how it went by filling your name in below, we would love to hear what McGowan’s office is saying in response. We have also left his office email below if you would also like to send an email about this pressing issue.

I was given the runaround from the premier’s office. I wasn’t allowed to ask my question of the premier or any of his staff, which was ‘why has Black Mountain been given an exemption to frack the Kimberley?’ Once I asked this, they put me through to Minister Johnston’s office who also wouldn’t let me speak directly to anyone. instead I was told to send an email which would take 4-6 weeks to get an answer. I said that would be a problem if fracking started before then, but not such a concern if the fracking didn’t happen until I had an explanation. i will send an email to the mining minister

I am a student hydrogeologist at Curtin university just about to finish and join the work force.

In all conversations with lecturers, none have encouraged fracking. All have strongly condoned the practice.

As a student, labor voter and soon to be graduate hydrogeologist, I see this as a slap in the face to science, and to the trust I have with the labor party.

Ground water is a precious resource that should not be jeopardised for what ever limited benifits that would come from this project.

Rung the premiers office and left a message strongly opposing any new fossil fuel projects in WA including Woodsides Scarborough project and Black Mountain bid to frack the Kimberly.

Lady sounding quite brusque, not interested in listening to my concerns about fracking in the Kimberley, but took my name and details.

I spoke with a staffer she passed on my concerns. I mentioned the legacy of environmental damage that we will have for the rest of time. The fact that we will be giving away energy cheaply and not even value adding to it with our own high energy demands a total lost situation benefiting a small minority if tax avoiding operators. And the fact that I swung from liberal only to be let down greatly by Mark.

The lady who answered the call was very friendly, and took our names, to add to the message for Mark MacGowan that we’re not happy for the MacGowan Government to give an exemption to a texan company to frack the Kimberley. We couldn’t even tell our whole story, I guess they’ve got inundated with calls already.

Ban fracking worldwide now. CSG mining releases Methane gas which is over 80 times worse than CO2 and if they contaminate the groundwater it will take 250,000 YEARS BEFORE IT WILL RECOVER . The risks are far too high for a short-term profit.

McGowan’s office redirected me to his Perth office, (65525000) where the lady took my name and number and said it would be put up later in the day’s notice’s.

Cooks office noted my comments, same for both – (most stupid call this government has made yet), and said basically same as McGowan’s office.
