97.5% of residents in North Boyanup say Yes to going Gasfield Free

SEPTEMBER 18, 2016: North Boyanup will declare itself Gasfield Free at a community celebration today (Sunday September 18).

The declaration follows an extensive survey of the community that saw residents go house to house, road by road asking their neighbours if they would like to declare the area gasfield free.

Swan Valley at Risk from Industrial Gasfields

SEPTEMBER 15, 2016: Public meetings will be held at Aveley and Muchea at the end of September, to discuss plans for industrial gasfields in the Swan Valley. 

Lock the Gate Alliance Mid West Coordinator, Simone van Hattem said there is a gas exploration license over a large part of the Swan Valley and the Chittering Valley.

Landholders call on new WA Nationals leader to support veto rights

AUGUST 9, 2016: The Lock the Gate Alliance is calling on the new leader of the Nationals in WA, Brendon Grylls to support the push for landholders’ to have the right of veto over gas exploration and mining on their lands.

Coordinator for Lock the Gate in WA Boudicca Cerese urged Mr Grylls to take a broom to the Nationals policies in relation to the protection of land and water from unsafe fracking and unconventional gas extraction.

Concern in Cowaramup at gas industry moves in the Whicher Range

Stratham to declare itself Gasfield Free this Sunday

 

JULY 24, 2016: Statham will today (Sunday July 24) join nearly 400 communities across Australia in declaring itself a Gasfield Free Community and is the first south west community to do so.

The declaration, to be made a special ceremony in Stratham, means that the gas mining industry does not have a social licence to operate in the area.

Call for Liberal MP to support veto rights following stand on land grab for pipeline

Gasfields in Queensland. is this the future we want for the south west.JULY 21, 2016: Gasfield Free South West is calling on Liberal MP Murray Cowper to support calls for veto rights for landholders following his public stance against the compulsory acquisition of private land for the Albany gas pipeline.

Mr Cowper, a former State minister has described plans to acquire land from farmers for the pipeline as the “official theft of rural land” and as representing “an explosive new threat to private landowners.”

Gasfield Free Community movement spreads to southwest WA


JULY 13, 2016:
Statham, in the Shire of Capel, is about to become the south west’s first Gasfield Free Community after more than 98 percent of residents said “YES” to being gasfield free.

Stratham will declare itself Gasfield Free at a special event on Sunday July 24. The declaration comes as the Capel Shire Council prepares to host an information expo on gas exploration in the south west on July 26.

Fracking confirmed as a major election issue as Labor MP’s call for SW ban

 

JULY 11, 2016: Lock the Gate Alliance and Gasfield Free South West have congratulated two Labor MPs who have come out in support of a ban on fracking in WA’s south west.

Collie Preston MP Mick Murray and Upper House member for the South West region Sally Talbot called for the ban in response to growing community concern.

South West community responds to DMP’S open letter about petroleum extraction in south west

 JUNE 30, 2016: Community groups in South West WA have expressed concern about the latest round of deceptive information provided to the public by the Department of Mines and Petroleum in a recently published “Open Letter to the Community”, which aims to counter the so-called ‘confusion’ around the issue of gas extraction in the region. 

Gas Free South West rejects claims made by the Department that there is no need for community concern and continues to demand that the WA Government abandon its plans to industrialise the South West with gasfields, thereby placing communities and existing industries at risk.
