Gasfield Free Community movement spreads to southwest WA


JULY 13, 2016:
Statham, in the Shire of Capel, is about to become the south west’s first Gasfield Free Community after more than 98 percent of residents said “YES” to being gasfield free.

Stratham will declare itself Gasfield Free at a special event on Sunday July 24. The declaration comes as the Capel Shire Council prepares to host an information expo on gas exploration in the south west on July 26.

Fracking confirmed as a major election issue as Labor MP’s call for SW ban

 

JULY 11, 2016: Lock the Gate Alliance and Gasfield Free South West have congratulated two Labor MPs who have come out in support of a ban on fracking in WA’s south west.

Collie Preston MP Mick Murray and Upper House member for the South West region Sally Talbot called for the ban in response to growing community concern.

South West community responds to DMP’S open letter about petroleum extraction in south west

 JUNE 30, 2016: Community groups in South West WA have expressed concern about the latest round of deceptive information provided to the public by the Department of Mines and Petroleum in a recently published “Open Letter to the Community”, which aims to counter the so-called ‘confusion’ around the issue of gas extraction in the region. 

Gas Free South West rejects claims made by the Department that there is no need for community concern and continues to demand that the WA Government abandon its plans to industrialise the South West with gasfields, thereby placing communities and existing industries at risk.

Groups across WA join in roadside call for action to protect Water4Life

JUNE 25, 2016: West Australians will be taking to the highways in force today in a show of support for better protection for our water resources from coal and gas mining.

From Broome to Brunswick Junction, Moora to the Metropolitan area,  Kalbarri to Kununurra and Mandurah to Margaret River, more than 25 groups will be joining organized gatherings under the banner of Lock the Gate’s national #Water4Life campaign.

Cervantes says “No” to fracking with Gasfield Free Declaration

CERVANTES June 23, 2016: The town of Cervantes will today become the seventh community in WA’s Mid West to declare itself gasfield free.

The declaration supported by 95 % of the community means that the unconventional gas industry is denied a social license to operate in the area.

Local groups taking part in national highway action to protect water resources

 JUNE 14, 2016: Local landholders and residents, Climate Angels, Knitting Nanas and other concerned citizens will take to our highways on June 25 in the biggest roadside protest ever seen.

The Bunbury group will gather on Bussell Highway near the Bunbury Bypass rest stop (between the roundabout and Thommos community garden) at around 10am on Saturday June 25.

Another Mid West Community Goes Gasfield Free

 JUNE 9, 2016: The community of Cervantes in WA’s Mid West is about to join scores of other of communities across Australia in declaring themselves Gasfield Free.

The Cervantes Groundwater Protection Group has spent many months surveying members of the local community to see if they would be willing to live in an industrialised gas field.

Burekup, Roelands community concerned about gas industry invasion

 JUNE 2, 2016:More than 100 people turned out at a meeting in Burekup on June 1 to discuss the risks of unconventional gas mining. 

Spokesperson for Gas Free South West Jodi Larke said the meeting was empowering and demonstrated the strength of concern in the local community about the risks to land, water and health posed by the gas industry.

South West landholders call for help as State Cabinet Ministers arrive in Busselton


  BUSSELTON MAY 28, 2016: Landholders from across the south west are calling on the National Party for help ahead of regional State Cabinet meetings in Busselton tomorrow.

The landholders want the Nationals to push for legislation to protect farmers and others from unconventional gas exploration and mining on their properties.

New National Mapping: 50 Million Hectares of Western Australia with Coal and Gas Titles or Applications

New national mapping of mining tenements across Australia released today reveals that vast areas of Western Australia are at risk, with 50 million hectares of its land mass covered by coal and gas titles and applications.

The mapping was released today as part of the launch of Lock the Gate Alliance’s national campaign – Water4Life – which is putting the impact of coal and unconventional gas mining on water at the centre of the organisation’s Federal election push.

The mapping shows that 37.3% of the Australian continent is covered by coal and gas titles and applications – an area 13 times the size of Great Britain.
